What is
Casa Comala?
Casa Comala is a free-to-use artist residency space located in a forested nature preserve in the mountains outside of Guadalajara.
Casa Comala is a home and haven—hence, the term “casa” in the name. A private property, the space represents the adage "aquí tienes tú casa." Residents are welcome to use this space in whatever way they please.
Casa Comala does not exist to generate a profit. It exists to foster community and creative work. It's a space where artists can create, connect, and rest.
The Location
Casa Comala is located on an acre-and-a-half of land within a nature preserve spanning nearly 70,000 acres. The preserve is located roughly two-and-a-half hours from Guadalajara and twenty minutes from the “magic town” of Tapalpa. "Magic town" is a designation the Mexican government gives to areas with unique historical, natural, and architectural attractions.
All constructions within the preserve maintain a small ecological and spatial footprint. This means that the area continues to be home to wildlife and untouched nature. There are brooks, a waterfall, and large rock formations. Residents can walk along the roads within the preserve or access nearby trails.
Casa Comala has neighbors—kind and quiet ones. The others living in the community adhere to the same rules of respecting the environment and maintaining a peaceful ambiance for all.
The preserve has 24-hour security, and there is a small store with basic supplies at the entrance.
